Why we run: motivational friendsIn fall 2009, three friends from the University of Oklahoma decided to take a girls' trip for a bonding experience and a break from classes. The weekend involved a drive to Tulsa and participation in the 2009 Williams Route 66 Marathon family of events, and ended with a surprise that none of the women expected. Friends Chelsey Collins, Ferrin Amrine and Chelsea Jones became acquainted through OU athletics - Amrine and Jones as part of the cross country team and Collins as a member of the women's golf team. They grew to be friends, however, after taking a fitness class together. The three discovered a shared love of running and began running to and from class as a group. The decision was made to travel to Tulsa to participate in the Williams Route 66 weekend. "We were broke, but Ferrin was from Tulsa. We love to run, and decided driving to Tulsa, crashing at her house, then running the various races would be a fun weekend," said Chelsey Collins, then an OU senior. Amrine ran the 5K, Collins ran the half marathon, and Jones ran the marathon. "We weren't expecting a lot," said Amrine. "We just wanted to go and have fun. None of our friends and family were there to watch, it was just something fun. Then, Chelsea Jones won the marathon. She was the first woman to finish the race." The race was Jones' first marathon. "Going in, I wasn't sure if I would even finish," Jones said. "There were times in the race when I thought I couldn't keep going, and I would just say a prayer, and keep moving." Each runner credited the others for the ability to race and finish. "The camaraderie was great," said Amrine. "We are all such great friends now after bonding and motivating each other during training and during the races." The women plan to participate in the 2010 Williams Route 66 races in November. The goals this year are higher, however. Amrine has registered for the half marathon while Collins and Jones are planning to run the marathon. "My goal for this year is to qualify for the Olympic trials," Jones said. She needs to shave only 15 minutes off her 2009 time to qualify for the trials. "We all love to run, but driving to Tulsa that weekend was an impulse decision, that ended with a great outcome, " said Collins. "What can I say? You're only young once!"

Why we Run: Caleb MeachamAs a parent of two young children, a full-time student at the OU College of Pharmacy in Tulsa and a high school football coach, Caleb Meacham needed a way to relieve stress. In 2008, he turned to running to clear his head and regain focus for his various responsibilities. "I played baseball and football in high school and college, so I've always been active," Meacham said. "I had never really tried running, but started running to relieve the stress of my daily life." After running in 5K events, Meacham decided to pursue training for the Williams Route 66 Marathon in 2008. Reality soon set in. "I just didn't have the time. I was really disappointed in myself, but I had to back out of the training," he said. "It was my second year of pharmacy school, and school and my family were the priorities. I didn't think I could commit." Meacham resumed training in the summer of 2009 for the next Williams Route 66 Marathon. He approached training that year with a newfound commit level to finish what he started the previous year. "I entered my third year of school with three priorities: kids, school and running," Meacham said. "I cut back on my extracurricular activities and realized that I might have to say 'no' to a few things along the way to keep these three priorities at the top." After training with Fleet Feet Sports, he tried his distance legs with the Williams Route 66 Quarter Marathon in August 2009. He then finished the 2009 Williams Route 66 Marathon in just over four hours. All of the familiar faces, his family waiting at the finish line and the help of his coach during the last few miles made running a hometown race truly enjoyable. After taking a short break from running to concentrate on class and training for Oklahoma FreeWheel, Meacham is now training for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon this fall. He hopes to one day qualify for the Boston Marathon. It's all about mental toughness, he says. "You have to set your priorities and stick to them, during training and the race. It's possible to set the goal and finish, no matter what else is going on." If you would like to share why you run, e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Why We Run: Pam O'NealAt the age of 51 years old, Pam O’Neal fell in love with running. The affair began in January of 2009, and by summer she and her younger sister were training for the Williams Route 66 Marathon.
O’Neal, from Tulsa, could not even walk around LaFortune Park, a three mile loop, without suffering from shortness of breath. As a registered nurse, she realized the long-term effects of her high blood pressure and weight.
“I was pre-diabetic, my doctor kept telling me,” O’Neal said. “I took a hard look at myself and realized that I didn’t want that to be my life anymore.”
Her first goal was to walk one LaFortune loop. She then added a few running intervals.
“I couldn’t believe when I ran a mile for the first time. We just kept adding distance, and before I knew it, I ran a 5K,” she said.
Thanks to encouragement from her sister, O’Neal signed up for the Williams Route 66 Marathon. The experience was life-changing, she said.
